Dodoma Gets a Six-Lane Expressway Connecting the CBD to Chamwino
Ready
Tanzania is moving into active construction of a 32 kilometre six lane dual carriageway connecting Dodoma CBD to Government City in Chamwino, deepening the infrastructure transformation reshaping the country’s political capital into a strategic administrative and logistics hub.
DODOMA — Tanzania is moving into active construction on a 32-kilometre six-lane dual carriageway connecting Dodoma's Central Business District to Chamwino Junction, the corridor serving the Government City that houses the country's administrative functions following the capital's designation as Tanzania's official seat of government.
The project is financed through a joint collaboration between the Ministry of Finance and the World Bank under the broader Dodoma Integrated and Sustainable Transport Project. Environmental and Social Management Framework and Resettlement Policy Framework clearances have been secured, enabling civil works to proceed.
TANROADS, which is administering the project, has completed tender vetting for the design and build contract parameters. Site levelling, clearing, and logistics campsite installations are underway, with civil works expected to commence in mid-2026. TARURA is simultaneously finalising procurement for non-motorised transport infrastructure and access roads in a synchronised rollout alongside the main carriageway works.
The expansion transforms the existing highway into a three-lane carriageway in each direction. Heavy freight traffic will be diverted onto the 112.3-kilometre Dodoma Outer Ring Road, which is already recording initial traffic diversion and early utilisation. The six-lane system is designed to establish a high-speed logistics link between the CBD and the Government City at Chamwino while relieving the transit bottlenecks that Dodoma's rapidly expanding urban population is generating.
Minister of Construction Abdallah Ulega is supervising engineering compliance across the project, including the installation of service roads and stormwater drainage infrastructure across the metropolitan corridor.
The Dodoma expansion is the latest in a series of TANROADS-administered infrastructure surges across Tanzania, whose combined effect on construction and engineering employment the ministry has cited as generating thousands of local jobs. It sits alongside the Standard Gauge Railway extension, Dar es Salaam port modernisation, and the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project as components of the infrastructure programme whose integrated development Uchumi360 has documented as the physical foundation of Tanzania's regional economic ambitions.
