Tanzanians Tapping Into China’s Zero-Tariff Trade Deal

With China being one of the world’s largest consumer markets, Tanzanian products can now reach millions of new customers without facing heavy trade barriers.

In June 2025, China announced a groundbreaking trade policy under the Changsha Declaration, offering zero tariffs on products from 53 African countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Beijing including Tanzania.

This new policy allows 100% of Tanzanian goods to enter the Chinese market duty-free, giving local businesses and farmers a golden opportunity to expand exports and compete globally. The initiative is part of the China–Africa Economic Partnership for Shared Development, aimed at deepening trade relations, supporting industrial growth, and strengthening Africa’s participation in global value chains.

What the Zero-Tariff Policy Means for Tanzania

For Tanzanian exporters, the removal of import duties in China means reduced export costs, simplified customs procedures, and better market access. With China being one of the world’s largest consumer markets, Tanzanian products can now reach millions of new customers without facing heavy trade barriers.

This move not only boosts Tanzania’s trade potential but also encourages value addition, transforming raw materials into finished or semi-finished goods before export, which increases profits and creates jobs locally.

Products With the Highest Potential

Tanzania’s diverse resources and agricultural products position it as a major beneficiary of this zero-tariff policy. Some of the top-performing goods likely to dominate the Chinese market include:

·       Honey – Natural Tanzanian honey is unique; market opportunities exist.

  • Coffee – Tanzania’s high-quality Arabica and Robusta beans are increasingly popular among Chinese coffee drinkers.
  • Tea – Premium Tanzanian tea varieties can compete with global brands in China’s growing tea market.
  • Cashew Nuts – Tanzania remains one of Africa’s leading cashew producers; duty-free access could significantly expand exports.
  • Fish and Seafood – With growing Chinese demand for fresh and processed fish, Tanzania’s marine exports have huge potential.
  • Avocados and Tropical Fruits – China’s middle class is driving demand for healthy, organic, and exotic fruits.
  • Sisal and Cotton – These raw materials can find new life in China’s manufacturing and textile industries.
  • Minerals and Gemstones – Duty-free access could also support Tanzania’s push to export polished stones and finished mineral products.
  • Food Spices – Tanzanian spices like cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, and ginger are highly sought after globally for their flavor and quality.
  • Leather and Ivory – Leather has export potential; ivory is generally restricted under CITES, so not legally exportable.
  • Groundnuts/Peanuts – Increasing demand for nuts and snacks; good export potential.
  • Beans, Sorghum and groundnut – Stable agricultural products; export viability depends on quality standards.
  • Organic Fruits and Vegetables – Organic products are highly attractive; certification may be required.

How Tanzanians Can Take Advantage

To fully benefit, Tanzanian entrepreneurs, cooperatives, and exporters should:

  1. Understand China’s import standards and packaging requirements.
  2. Collaborate with trade promotion agencies such as the Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) as well as both the Embassy of Tanzania in China and the Embassy of China in Tanzania.
  3. Invest in quality control and branding to meet Chinese consumer expectations.
  4. Leverage digital platforms (like Alibaba or JD.com) to reach buyers directly.
  5. Seek partnerships with logistics and freight companies experienced in China-Africa trade routes.

Strengthening the Tanzania-China Partnership

The zero-tariff deal reflects the growing strategic partnership between Tanzania and China, built on mutual respect, trade cooperation, and shared development goals under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). It represents a major step toward diversifying Tanzania’s economy, empowering small businesses, and positioning the country as a key player in Africa-Asia trade.

 The Big Question

As Tanzanian products now enjoy free entry into one of the world’s largest markets, the question remains: Are Tanzanian entrepreneurs ready to seize this opportunity?
